A painting, abstract or figurative, that you feel establishes a relationship between the spectator and the virtual space of the painting.

The paintings I chose are by Richard Hamilton whose exhibition of The Late Works is now in The National Gallery.  After seeing one of his works  on a poster for the exhibition on the tube  I went to see it live and I was stunned. He managed to combine the love of digital art with his painting skills.  His use of colour and detail is just spectacular.

Richard Hamilton, Bathroom - fig.1 1997                                  Richard Hamilton, Bathroom - fig.2 1998

The paintings above come in a series containing two paintings: Bathroom – fig. 1 and Bathroom – fig. 2 which show the same bathroom interior. Bathroom figure 1 is captured in motion, blurry like on an long exposure photo giving you a feeling and notion of movement.  In Bathroom figure 2 the person has moved and is shown standing still in a different position. Both of them put together give an amazing feeling of a space sequence even though the space itself is shown is the same view. The red square seems to be holding the scene, view is not framed by outside boundaries but a fixed element within it.
